Buyer's Frequently Asked Questions

General Info

  • Certified coins offer grade and authenticity you can trust. The foundation for independent coin grading was laid with the creation of the Professional Coin Grading Service, PCGS, in 1986 and the Numismatic Guarantee Corporation, NGC, just one year later. Both the PCGS and the NGC remain the most respected coin grading services in the world.

PCGS and NGC are the only universally accepted grading services. Because PCGS and NGC guarantee the grade and authenticity of any coin that passes their rigorous standards, collectors and investors no longer need to be coin experts to safely buy and sell rare U.S. coins. PCGS- or NGC- certified coins may be traded sight-unseen with full confidence in their grade and authenticity. Beyond sight-unseen trading and guaranteed authenticity, both PCGS and the NGC offer world-class grading by a staff picked from an the most elite in the numismatic field. The two also offer coin encapsulation.

After grading by expert numismatists, each coin is sonically sealed and tagged with certification number, grade, date, denomination, unique bar code and pedigree if applicable sealed in a plastic holder with a serial number, description and guaranteed grade. Any classic U.S. gold or silver coin selling for more than $100 should be sealed in a PCGS or NGC holder. Another benefit of these two certification companies is problem-free coins. Both PCGS and NGC policy prohibits encapsulating coins that have suffered artificial toning, major scratches, environmental damage, PVC damage, excessive cleaning or planchet flaws. International Precious Metals is an authorized dealer for both PCGS and NGC certified coins.
