History of the U.S. Silver Eagle
Despite being one of the most popular silver coins to purchase, the American Eagle Silver bullion coin has only been around since the U.S. Mint produced the first coin in 1986. Since then, it has developed an interesting history.
The House Armed Services Committee first authorized selling some of the nation’s silver holdings in 1982 to balance the federal budget. The decision came after more than ten years of Congressional pushback, but an agreement was eventually reached. 75% of Defense National Stockpile silver holdings would be sold over three years.
The total equaled 105.1 million Troy ounces, and the decision marked a change in how the country would handle its silver holdings in the future. However, they soon overturned the 1982 decision because of fear that it would ruin the silver market.
Two years later, Congress was faced with another silver dilemma when the Liberty Coin Act of 1985 passed. The act officially authorized production of the United States Eagles coins. The coins were then introduced to the market on November 24, 1986.
From the first production date, the Mint locations have changed three times. It started in San Francisco, moved to Philadelphia in 1993, and began in West Point in 2001. Each Mint left its mark, “S,” “P,” and “W,” respectively.
In 2009, West Point did not mint any proof versions but began again in 2010. They continued to produce all of the coins until the other two locations joined in production from 2016 to 2017.
