The American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States, first minted in the year 1986. This coin is a legal tender coin by the authority of the United States of America with a denomination of one US Dollar.
Certification of modern American Eagles did not become prevalent until 2001-2002. Recently as more investors and collectors have come in to the metals market, demand for quality assurance and ease of liquidity has helped move certification of Modern Issue U.S. Coins into an industry standard over the past decade. These early years of modern issue coins can be incredibly difficult to find in high grades, especially MS-70. The low survival rates of several coins makes this a very thin market and many of these pieces have not only remained stable in a volatile bullion market, but have witnessed increases that far exceed any gains recently seen by their bullion counter-parts.
The design on these coins are of very high quality, despite them being struck some time ago. The obverse features the beautiful and popular Walking Liberty design originally used on U.S. Silver Half Dollars from 1916 through 1947. The design was an instant success and became one of the most popular designs in American coinage. The reverse design depicts John Mercanti’s rendition of an eagle and a shield, symbolic of American strength and pride.
