The Silver Eagle's original obverse design was based on Adolph A. Weinman’s 1916 “Walking Liberty” half dollar, widely considered one of the most beautiful American coins ever minted. The classic reverse design displayed a proud eagle crest beneath 13 stars.
In honor of the 35th Anniversary of the American Eagle program in 2021, the United States Mint completely revamped the well-known reverse design of the Silver Eagle. While the obverse remained more or less unchanged, the reverse of the newest Gold Eagle releases now feature all-new artwork by AIP Artist, Emily Damstra. Thanks to modern design technology, the updated obverse is a closer reflection of Weinman’s original vision and includes the addition of his traditional artists mark.
