The Burnished series was first introduced in 2006 and produced for 3 years, as both 4 coin sets and individual pieces. The coins feature a light matte finish designed to fill a niche between the Mint's brilliant uncirculated bullion and proof issues. However, their most distinctive feature is the prestigious West Point mint mark. Many of the Mint's most finely crafted and low mintage issues bear the "W" mint mark, giving all coins struck there special mystique and appeal to investor-collectors everywhere.
When the first wave of major financial crises hit in 2008, the Mint found itself unable to keep up with demand for gold coinage and suspended the burnished program entirely for 2009 & 2010. Each of these brilliant uncirculated American Gold Eagle coins is struck on special Burnished blanks. Although they are similar in appearance to the bullion coins, these are hand-fed into specially adapted coining presses one at a time, with perfection in mind behind each strike. These have been produced with ultra low mintages, and even smaller amounts certified in Mint State 70.
On May 5, 2011, the first burnished Gold Eagle since 2008 was produced. The U.S. Mint released a single denomination of the "Burnished Uncirculated" American Gold Eagle in the one ounce $50 issue. This limited offering has spurred interest in the entire series, now seen as even more special and limited than originally intended. Not long after the Mint sold out, premiums began to climb. The final mintage for the 2011 was only 8,729 coins. This represented the lowest mintage for any American Gold Eagle in the history of the program. History was made once again in 2012 when the sales figure came in at an astonishing 5,829 coins. Collectors and investors alike have clamored to get their hands on these new modern day rarities.
