$5 Indian Head 1908-1929

5-ind-group.jpgThe new coin designs ushered in by president Theodore Roosevelt were revolutionary; not surprisingly they were also controversial. The successor to the old $5 Half Eagle coin caused a stir due to the unique incuse design, whereby all of the coins features are sunken into the coin rather than raised. This idea was suggested to Roosevelt by Dr. William Bigelow. Noted Boston sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt was commissioned to execute the idea. Though some traditionalists balked at the new coin, it quickly became accepted in widespread use, and these coins remain among the most popular and sought-after U.S. gold issues.
