$10 Indian Head 1907-1933 |
|
Like the Double Eagle of this era, this coin was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, working closely with president Theodore Roosevelt. With the aim of asserting America’s growing importance on the world stage, it was decided that the Native American motif would better reflect the unique culture of the United States than would the classical Greek and Roman-inspired designs that had marked most other portraits of Liberty. The reverse depicts what is arguably the most bold and majestic Eagle to be found on any U.S. coin.
