Indian Princess $1 (Type III) 1856-1889 |
|
Inspired by the design of the enigmatic $3 Gold coin, the third incarnation of the $1 coin was the one to get things “just right,” addressing matters of concern in the earlier designs. The type I gold dollar was criticized for being too small, while its replacement type II design proved difficult to correctly strike. This third version of the $1 Gold coin was struck continuously at the Philadelphia Mint and also at various Branch Mints, and includes dates from the Civil War era.
