$20 Liberty Double Eagle 1849-1907 |
|
The largest and most impressive of all regular issue United States coin denominations, the Liberty Double Eagle was mythic even in its own time. This is the coin of the Gold Rushes, the Wild West, and the Civil War - some of the most colorful periods of American history. Though $20 doesn’t seem like much to us now, the coin was a larger sum than would typically be carried in the pocket of the common man. Indeed, it wasn’t until the time of the California Gold Rush that the striking of an issue larger than the $10 was deemed to be justified. Designed by James B. Longacre, the $20 Liberty was struck in Philadelphia, as well as a number of the Branch Mints.
