$1 Liberty (Type I) 1849-1854

1-type1-group.jpgThe $1 Gold coin was a long time in coming. There was considerable debate as to the merits of the gold dollar, as silver had been firmly established as the metal from which a dollar coin was to be coined. Proponents of the dollar coin argued that the silver dollar was too big and cumbersome to carry; ironically the Type I dollar faced criticism for being too small. Designed by James B. Longacre, the Type I dollar’s tenure spans but six years. The Type II design which replaced it was thinner but given a greater diameter in response to criticism of the Type I coin’s especially small size.
